Car Service Questions: Your Top 5 Answered

At Schumacher Volkswagen of North Palm Beach, our service team fields a lot of questions about car maintenance and repairs. And because we want to send our customers home with a little bit of knowledge in addition to a fixed car, we have put together five of the most commonly asked questions that we hear along with some insight.

Learn the Basics of Car Maintenance & Repairs

1. Why is my check engine light on?

A check engine light can indicate a number of potential problems ranging from very minor (such as the gas cap not being securely tightened) to much more serious (like a catalytic converter that needs replacing).

Fortunately, a check engine light is easy to diagnose. Our diagnostic scanner can let you know within minutes what the problem might be.

2. Is using premium fuel better for my car?

Only if your vehicle has a high-performance engine for which premium fuel is recommended. Otherwise, unleaded fuel is perfectly fine and will save you precious pennies at the pump.

In fact, many of today’s higher-performance vehicles are designed with an internal sensor that will adjust the engine’s compression ratio based on the type of fuel that it detects. The best thing to do is consult your owner’s manual as it will almost always include the type of recommended fuel.

3. What about synthetic oil?

Synthetic oil lasts longer than conventional oil and is more effective at fighting off engine dirt and sludge and helping a vehicle start in cold temperatures.

Drivers who generally do not travel long distances can benefit from synthetic oil because conventional oil may not get hot enough during a short trip to effectively burn off engine impurities. Drivers who live in cold winter climates and drivers who use their vehicles to tow or haul heavy loads can also benefit from synthetic oil.

Synthetic vs. conventional oil depends greatly on several different factors and our service team members will be happy to discuss the oil needs of your particular vehicle.

4. Do my windshield wiper blades need to be replaced?

More than likely, the answer is yes. It’s recommended that windshield wiper blades be replaced every six to 12 months, but most people do not replace them with such frequency.

Signs of wiper blades that are ready to be replaced include ones that bounce or make a screeching sound while operating or ones that leave streaks on the glass.

5. Do my tires need to be rotated?

Your owner’s manual will tell you how often you should rotate your tires, but it will likely be in the neighborhood of 4,000 to 8,000 miles. In other words, it’s recommended for most people to rotate their tires every six months or every other time they have an oil change.

If you notice uneven wear patterns on your tires, experience a loss of tire pressure, or feel the car vibrating or pulling hard in one direction while driving, it may be time for a tire rotation.
